 Introduction:
The interaction between fluids and solid structures, along with free boundary problems, is a fundamental area of applied mathematics with far-reaching applications in engineering, physics, and biological systems. This special session aims to bring together researchers studying both the theoretical and numerical aspects of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and free boundary problems. On the theoretical front, we will delve into well-posedness, stability, asymptotic behavior, and control of FSI models, as well as the mathematical challenges that arise from coupling incompressible or compressible fluids with elastic or rigid structures. On the numerical side, we will explore recent advances in computational methods for simulating FSI and free boundary problems, addressing challenges in accuracy, efficiency, and stability. We will also consider the broader class of free boundary problems involving fluid equations, with an emphasis on well-posedness, asymptotics, and control. By bridging theory and computation, this session aims to foster collaboration among researchers tackling different facets of these intricate and highly interdisciplinary problems.
