 Introduction:
This special session is devoted to recent challenges and advances in the study of chaotic behavior and mixing phenomena in complex physical systems such as those describing fluid flows, particles, or waves. Of particular interest are systems driven by degenerate noise, systems where randomness enters through a lower dimensional spatial component such as those described by PDEs with boundary noise, or systems which may exhibit singularities. In this context, control theoretic arguments increasingly play an important technical role, while being also of remarkable independent interest. The scope of this session is not limited to random dynamics; for instance, one could think about the question how well a given deterministic flow mixes an immersed concentration, or whether such a process could be externally controlled in a satisfactory manner. The general goal is to learn about different perspectives on these interconnected topics and to jointly explore possible steps towards a better mathematical understanding of complex nonlinear systems.
