| There have been several characterizations of spaces with the fixed point property in terms of inverse limits. Instead, we give two characterizations of fixed point free mappings from a P-like continuum to itself in terms of open covers of the space. This may lead to a different approach to the fixed point problem in the plane which remains unsolved after 150 years. |
