A Hybrid control approach to the route planning problem for sailing boats.

Abstract:
We present an optimal control approach to the problem of route planning for sailing boats. The problem presents many difficulties connected to the non convexity of the dynamics and the complexity of the variables involved. The approach that we propose is based on hybrid control. We show the effectiveness of the latter and we show how some aspects of the phenomenon, not possible to consider with other frameworks, are included in the study. We extend some of those ideas to a multiplayer scenario where an optimal strategy is derived in relation to the choices of the other players using a mean field games model.
