In this talk, we consider the Cauchy problem for a nonlinear beam equation with weak damping. First we show the the existence of a global solution and its decay estimates under small initial data condition. Next we derive asymptotic behavior of the global solution, which shows that the estimates obtained here are optimal. Our strategy for the proof is an application of the estimates for the linear solution of the damped beam equation.
