Blood flow in arteries is characterized by pulse pressure waves due to the interaction with the vessel walls. To avoid spurious reactions due to the truncation of the domain for numerical simulations, we consider the coupling between 3D and reduced 1D fluid-structure interaction (FSI) models to describe blood flow in compliant vessels and derive energy estimates for the fully 3D-1D FSI coupling. Numerical tests are presented to illustrate the coupling procedure.
