Abstract:
The Maxwell-Bloch system of equations (MBEs) describes resonant interactions between coherent light and two-level media. The system is completely integrable in certain limits, which means that many analytical tools can be brought to bear on these problems. The inverse scattering transform (IST) was first formulated in 1970s. In this talk, we will present a new version of the IST using Beals and Coifman`s eigenfunctions. We will also present the long-distance asymptotics for the system and discuss the relation between MBEs and the sine-Gordon equation in the asymptotics.
