Complex dynamics in a pendulum equation with piecewise constant torque

Abstract:
We study the existence of subharmonic solutions and solutions with complicated dynamics in a pendulum equation subjected to a periodic forcing term which is allowed to have nonzero mean value. Our choice of the periodic perturbation is that of forcing term close to a step function which can be interpreted as two alternating torques, according to a model originally studied by F. Tricomi (1931-1933). The proofs are based on a topological approach.
